Subject: Engine - Irregular Engine Operation
Models: Engines: Option:

Complaint: Engine jerking, idle too high, engine stalling, no throttle response, following TC´s are possible: P1525, P1526, P1550 (emergency operation mode), P1555
Cause: Throttle valve is not closing correct due to a too high dirt contamination of the throttle body.
Production: None.

The TSB 1391 will be invalid as of 07/31/2003 for X18XE1 engines. For the
X18XE1 engines see TSB 1590.

Clean throttle body.

Warning:

Consider the safefy regulations.

Risk of injury due to sharp edges of the throttle valve.


Do not use hard and/or sharp objects for the cleaning procedure, this
could lead to damages of the throttle body unit.




The components of the engine are sensitive to shock and must not be
installed if damaged.




This applies in particular to the throttle valve body as severe malfunction
may result if it is damaged, e.g being dropped.

Working Procedure:


 1. Remove throttle body




     - see working procedure "Throttle body, Remove and Install", group "J", 
     of the corresponding Service Instruction.




     - see working procedure "Throttle body (Throttle Valve Adjuster)
     Remove and Install (Z 18 XE)", group "J", of the corresponding
     Service Instruction.




     
 2. Open the throttle valve manually.
 3. Clean the throttle valve and the throttle housing wall with a
    fluffyfree cleaning cloth or a brush (e.g. a toothbrush) by using
    an adequate cleaning fluid.
 4. Actuate 3 to 5 times throttle valve manually.
 5. Check throttle body visually for remaining contamination, if
    necessary clean again.
 6. Install throttle body by using a new gasket




     - see working procedure "Throttle body, Remove and Install", group "J", 
     of the corresponding Service Instruction.




     - see working procedure "Throttle body (Throttle Valve Adjuster)
     Remove and Install (Z 18 XE)", group "J", of the corresponding
     Service Instruction.




 7. Ensure a new learning of the values of the Throttle body unit
    after ignition on by waiting at least 5 sec.
 8. Close hood.
